SUMMARY:Level Up: Moving Beyond Screen Time to Game Literacy
DESCRIPTION:Video games are a medium\, not a monolith. While many games offer profound opportunities for creativity\, spatial problem-solving\, and healthy community building\, some engineering tactics are intended to subconsciously influence user behavior to incentivize play. If asking your child to turn off a game always ends in an argument\, it’s rarely a parenting failure. It’s often because your child is still developing the cognitive tools needed to recognize the sophisticated game engines designed to prolong their engagement. \nThis workshop fundamentally shifts the conversation from enforcing arbitrary screen time limits to building true game literacy. By looking under the hood of today’s most popular platforms\, parents will learn how to distinguish between healthy digital environments and those that rely on casino-like compulsion loops. You will leave equipped with the vocabulary and tools to help your child safely navigate the medium\, recognize manipulative design\, and step out of the algorithmic loop. \nParents & Educators Will Walk Away With:\n– A clear set of benchmarks to distinguish between intentional game design that respects the player’s time (with clear beginnings\, middles\, and ends) and open-ended extraction loops designed strictly for infinite engagement.\n– Strategies to introduce healthy\, physical-world friction to rebuild their child’s capacity for face-to-face conflict resolution and resilience against online echo chambers.\n– How to shift their household response to a post-game meltdown from punitive discipline to immediate neurological triage.
