SUMMARY:Critical Media Literacy Training Program for Educators
DESCRIPTION:This is the second of three sessions as part of a professional development series. \nWith the rapid changes in the media ecosystem and the potential disruption and affordances offered by AI\, the need for critical media literacy (CML) amongst educators and their capacity to model and foster such skills in their students is critical. A rise in conspiracy theories and radical political movements means that a critical view of news media is a crucial skill for all citizens. For teachers\, critical media literacy (CML) is not just a skill for democracy: it is also part of almost every aspect of their work as educators. Rapid-fire curricular changes\, a rise in book-banning and false history\, and a student body who have grown up taking social media and AI for granted are only some of the media-related challenges faced by teachers today. This course will provide educators with an accessible and equitable way to learn the skills of critical media literacy. \nDates: January 5 – 12\, 2026 \nTimes:\nLive Zoom sessions held from 5:00pm – 6:00pm EST\, on the following dates: \n\nMonday\, January 5\, 2026\nFriday\, January 9\, 2026\nMonday\, January 12\, 2026\n\nFormat: Online with Live Zoom Sessions (See dates and times above) \nPrice: $295 \nPlease Note: This course is offered on a non-credit basis only.

SUMMARY:Digital Detectives: Teaching Students to Navigate Misinformation and Media Bias
DESCRIPTION:This is a poster session at the Future of Education Technology Conference.\n\nStudents are inundated with information\, some accurate\, much of it not. This session dives into the crucial work of helping students become “digital detectives\,” equipped with the skills to evaluate digital content critically and independently. Participants will explore hands-on strategies for teaching students to identify credible sources\, recognize misinformation\, detect media bias\, and question digital narratives. The session will feature age-appropriate tools\, lesson examples\, and cross-curricular applications designed to build media literacy from elementary through high school. Attendees will leave with strategies that not only address academic standards but also empower students to become discerning consumers and responsible sharers of digital information in both school and life.

SUMMARY:The AI Shift: Moving from Reaction to Readiness in Your Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Schools are racing to respond to the rapid rise of artificial intelligence\, yet most responses fall into two camps: fear-driven restriction or reactive policy-making. Meanwhile\, students are already using AI tools every day\, often without guidance\, transparency\, or critical skill-building. This session invites educators to move beyond panic\, policing\, or avoidance and toward a more intentional\, future-ready approach that privileges AI readiness in the classroom. This conversation will highlight why simply trying to block or outmaneuver AI is a losing strategy. Instead\, we’ll explore how AI can open powerful opportunities for student inquiry\, creativity\, differentiation\, and media literacy when educators lead with purpose\, ethics\, and critical thinking. \nEducators will leave with:\n• A clear understanding of why students need critical AI literacy now\n• Practical\, low-barrier strategies for integrating AI tools into instruction\n• Approaches to support ethical\, equitable\, and transparent use \nAudience: This session is designed for any educator who feels overwhelmed by AI’s speed\, concerned about misuse\, or unsure how to begin\, and who wants to take the first confident step toward preparing students for a world where AI is already shaping how they learn\, communicate\, and participate. SUMMARY:Testimony of the Human Spirit Screening and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center (HHREC)\, schools are invited to view the documentary Testimony of the Human Spirit on Wednesday\, March 11 and participate in a discussion with HHREC Director of Education\, Steve Goldberg. \nThis documentary explores the Holocaust through the memories of six men and women who lived through it as children or adolescents under the Third Reich. Woven together with family photographs\, archival footage\, and a moving original score\, their testimonies illuminate what everyday life was like for young people and their families under Nazi persecution. The survivors’ accounts\, conveyed with clarity\, warmth\, and candor\, provide valuable insights into both the historical realities of the period and the resilience of the human spirit.

SUMMARY:From Misinformation to Empowerment: Media Literacy for Youth and Adults in the Age of AI
DESCRIPTION:In an increasingly digital and media-saturated world\, Media and Information Literacy (MIL) has become essential for enabling individuals to critically access\, evaluate\, and use information and media content. The rapid expansion of social media\, algorithmic filtering\, and generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies has transformed the information landscape\, creating new opportunities\, but also amplifying the spread of misinformation and disinformation. These developments pose significant challenges for informed decision-making\, social cohesion\, and democratic participation. While MIL initiatives have traditionally focused on youth\, there is a growing need to strengthen the MIL capacities of adult learners and\, in particular\, adult educators who play a key role in fostering critical thinking\, responsible media engagement\, and digital competencies across societies. \nTo mark World Telecommunication and Information Society Day\, this webinar – organized by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) in collaboration with UNESCO’s Media and Information Unit within the Communication and Information Sector – will explore the role of MIL in adult learning and education in the age of AI. Bringing together policymakers\, researchers and practitioners from Global Alliance for Literacy (GAL) countries\, the event will examine emerging challenges and promising practices for equipping adult educators with essential MIL competencies. \nA highlight of the event will be the official launch of our new multilingual self-learning course on media and information literacy for adult educators. This course has been designed to empower educators with practical tools\, real-world examples and adaptable strategies to confidently navigate rapidly evolving digital environments. Participants will get an exclusive first look at how the course can strengthen critical and responsible engagement with information and how it can be used immediately in their own teaching and learning contexts.
