NAMLE Summits

NAMLE Summits bring together educators, youth, researchers, industry leaders, and advocates to explore the evolving intersections of media, technology, and society. These gatherings create space for shared learning, innovative problem-solving, and cross-sector collaboration with one shared goal: advancing media literacy education as a vital skill for all. By convening diverse perspectives — from classrooms to boardrooms to student councils — NAMLE’s summits help shape the future of media literacy education, addressing challenges from misinformation to digital wellbeing to emerging technologies like AI.

Each summit, no matter the focus, strives to:

  • Highlight why media literacy matters in democracy, education, and culture.
  • Spark shared learning, innovative problem-solving, and cross-sector collaboration.
  • Identify emerging challenges and propose effective solutions.
  • Elevate new voices and empower communities to shape the next chapter of media literacy education.

Together, NAMLE Summits are more than one-day events. They represent a growing movement to ensure that media literacy remains central to education and civic life, preparing all people to think critically, engage responsibly, and thrive in our media-saturated world.

Amplify Youth Summit (2025)

The inaugural Amplify Youth Summit centers youth voices on digital life, well-being, and representation. Hosted in partnership with the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital, this summit brings young people into conversation with educators and experts to examine the challenges and opportunities of online spaces. Together, participants explore how to foster healthier digital environments, support mental and emotional health, and empower youth as creators and leaders.

AI Literacy Summit (2024)

The AI Literacy Summit tackled one of the most urgent questions of our time: How can media literacy education be most effective in the age of artificial intelligence? Educators, scholars, NGOs, industry professionals, and students came together in a highly participatory setting to analyze issues such as bias, misinformation, and copyright, while testing how traditional media literacy frameworks adapt to emerging technologies. The summit helped lay the groundwork for integrating AI literacy into the broader media literacy movement.

Media Industry Summit (2024)

The Media Industry Summit, held in partnership with ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, brought media, journalism, and tech leaders together with educators to discuss media literacy’s role in industry practices. The summit emphasized the shared responsibility of creators, educators, and institutions to promote responsible media engagement in an age of nonstop news cycles and information overload. Participants identified opportunities for collaboration and strategies to expand the reach of media literacy beyond schools.

Media Literacy Leadership Summit (2023)

NAMLE’s first-ever Media Literacy Leadership Summit invited educators, researchers, and advocates to collectively envision the future of media literacy education in the U.S. Facilitated by the Civic Imagination Project of USC, the summit encouraged participants to step outside the box and imagine bold pathways for scaling and strengthening media literacy nationwide. The event marked the beginning of a series of summits designed to bring fresh ideas and collaborative strategies to the field.
