Member Spotlight: Lily Afify

Lily is High School Student in California and a Member of NAMLE’s Youth Advisory Council

What do you do?

Through the Digital Truths Initiative at my school, I aim to spread awareness on digital literacy to middle and high school students.

What is your latest work or project in media literacy?

“MUNstitute” and workshop was open to all students at Mira Costa High School where the workshop covered practices to use when researching, disinformation vs. misinformation and how to combat it. Techniques were taught on how to battle the validity of sources and implemented in a debate regarding the matter.

Why is media literacy important to you?

As electronics are such a huge part of my life, I am constantly on social media; whether it is for entertainment or educational purposes. I learned from a young age it is important to distinguish fact vs. fiction as it is very common for others to spread mis/disinformation online. I didn’t want to be perceived as “young” and “naive” so I had always had the initiative to become educated on the topic.

What are you most excited about in the media literacy field?

I am most excited to meet others who share the same passion as me while gaining insight on their perspective and how it has effected them.

Why did you become a NAMLE member, what benefits do you see to membership, and how will it support your work?

I became a NAMLE member in order to advance my knowledge within the media literacy field. It heavily supports my work as the Digital Truths Initiative aims to spread awareness about the issue to younger audiences.
