Member Spotlight: Maggie LeBeau

Student @ University of Missouri, Member @ NAMLE’s Youth Advisory Council

What do you do?

I am a member of NAMLE’s Youth Advisory Council, and a student at the University of Missouri.

Tell us about your latest work or project in media literacy.

The council just finished our project on media literacy education basics, teaching young people what media literacy is and how to use it. I was on the content creation team and created a video on three steps to follow before sharing/spreading content online. I think it was an important topic because many people quickly share things online before fact checking it and understanding it’s impact which can further spread misinformation.

Why is media literacy important to you?

Growing up on social media, I’ve seen how misinformation can cause polarization, heightened emotions, and distrust. This especially effects topics such as health, the environment, and politics. As we become more reliant on mass information shared online, it is important to be diligent in what we are consuming and sharing by using media literacy practices such as fact checking, lateral reading, and sourcing. This way, we can foster a better and more truthful digital environment.

What are you most excited about in the media literacy field?

I’m excited for the growing awareness of media literacy among my peers both on my college campus and online. Digital media literacy ideas and practices are brought up more and there is a growing passion to ensure we are safely navigating the internet.

Why did you become a NAMLE member, what benefits do you see to membership, and how will it support your work?

I enjoy being a part of a community that is so passionate about digital wellness, truth, journalism, and accurate information.
