Member Spotlight: Mallory Gilberg

Student @ Penn State University, Former Social Media Intern @ NAMLE

What do you do?

I am a public relations student at Penn State, and at NAMLE I helped create content for all of our different social media platforms.

Tell us about your latest work or project in media literacy.

I recently created a short video about a JMLE paper on “media quiteracy,” and reflected on its power and impact in media literacy education.

Why is media literacy important to you?

Media literacy is important to me because it is essential to virtually every aspect of our lives. Whether most people realize it or not, most of our lives are centered around media, and learning how to critically unpack and analyze the messages within that media makes stronger, unified citizens.

What are you most excited about in the media literacy field?

I am most excited about seeing the growth in media literacy education in younger ages, as children are beginning to enter the digital media landscape at a much younger age than we have seen before. I am also excited to see a growth in passion for media literacy in the faces of younger generations.

Why did you become a NAMLE member, what benefits do you see to membership, and how will it support your work?

I became a NAMLE member not only because I was an intern, but because as a student, being a member gives me endless opportunities to grow and learn from prominent members in the field of media literacy education. I see membership as greatly beneficial because it provides me with a community and network of like-minded individuals, as well as the latest resources that I can use to play my part in supporting the field of media literacy.
