Sophie Yang is a junior at the Bronx High School of Science and a staff reporter for her school’s newspaper, the Science Survey. She developed a strong commitment towards media literacy, after interviewing local community members and witnessing the underrepresentation and misframing of community voices in news coverage and local decision-making. Sophie is dedicated to helping students and community members identify misinformation, recognize bias, and engage critically with the news, and to use media literacy as a tool to fight for more accurate and inclusive media. Through NAMLE Youth Advisory Council, she hopes to amplify underrepresented voices within the media and promote a more informed, thoughtful generation of media consumers and creators. Sophie is also the founder of Hestia4All, a youth-led social enterprise that supports student artists while providing clothing to homeless shelters.
